Keep a folder ready: a one-page resume, two samples, and the names of tools you already use. Beginner titles can run with that. Specialist titles want a cert file or a portfolio link.
Remote on the posting is not remote in the calendar
Turns out fully remote is not the normal week for a lot of college-educated workers. Stanford SIEPR research on working from home reported a 40-country survey in which English-speaking countries averaged about 1.5 to 2 paid workdays at home. Europe sat a little lower.
Filter first. Then read. Indeed's remote filter sits under work type after your keyword search. Toggle remote versus hybrid so a three-day office job does not land in the same pile.
Starter titles beginners actually get interviews for
Customer support, virtual assistant work, tutoring, transcription, and some operations jobs still hire people without a degree. Scammers clone those titles.
A legitimate support job names the company. It has an interview. It ships a headset or a laptop. You do not buy training on a personal card.
Transcription is more of a marketplace grind. Rev is the name most applicants try first. You pass their test, claim files, and get paid by the audio minute. Slow at first. Useful if you stick and later add medical or legal vocabulary.
VA work splits. Agencies such as BELAY and MyOutDesk recruit assistants and match them to clients. Upwork is the open market, where you pitch inbox, calendar, and research skills yourself. Agency screening is slower. The open market is noisier.
Tutoring wants subject proof and a quiet room. Blocks can sit around a school day. Platforms also cut hours without much warning.
If you're coming off school pickup or a second-shift job, the listing language gets messy fast, because one company will call the role remote when they mean three days on Zoom from a spare room they never inspect, and the next wants you in a headset at 7 a.m. with the camera optional, and you only catch the schedule in the last paragraph of a post that otherwise reads like a gift.
Data entry is the riskiest beginner keyword. Some firms still hire clerks on hourly payroll. A huge share of ads are identity traps. Require a company-domain email and a video interview before you share a Social Security number.
Titles that need a portfolio, a cert, or a repo
Software developers, QA testers, data analysts, and cybersecurity analysts already work in tickets and cloud tools. Hiring managers know how to interview them on video. You still have to show work.
To be honest, a "prompt engineer" headline on a gig app is often copywriting or ops with extra adjectives. Boards still hire writers, analysts, and developers. They rarely hire a beginner to type into a chatbot for a six-figure salary.
Cyber listings often mention Security+ or a similar cert. Help desk wants ticket systems. Developers want a language and Git. Designers want Figma or Adobe files. Writers want clips.
SEO, social, and graphic design live on both sides. Fiverr wants a packaged gig. Indeed wants a coordinator resume. Don't paste a gig description into a corporate application and hope.
Bookkeeping, medical coding, and paralegal support go remote when the files are already digital. Put the software on the resume. QuickBooks, billing platforms, case tools. A text from a "law firm HR desk" with no website is still a hard no.
Recruiters and HR coordinators get remote seats in companies that already run distributed teams. If you can source and keep an ATS clean, apply. Instructional designers and translators need samples more than slogans. SDRs can work from home. They still have a quota. Read the call volume.
Project coordinators should talk about shipped dates. Skip the buzzwords.
Job boards and freelance apps are not interchangeable

Search in a fixed order
- Pick two titles from the table you can back with a sample, a cert, or a past job.

- Open the company careers page in another tab. No site, no job.
- Add a curated remote board if you are targeting salaried professional roles and want a shorter list.
- If you are going freelance, finish the profile before you bid. Two samples beat a clever bio.
- Log each application: date, board, title, link, follow-up day.
Here's the only extra rule. Apply to the posting in front of you, not to a fantasy version of the title.
Run a scam check before you send ID
The FTC's job scam page is clearer than most blogs. Honest employers do not charge you to get hired. They do not send a check and ask you to ship money or gift cards back.
Stop if any of this shows up:
- A recruiter pinged you on WhatsApp, Telegram, or SMS and you never applied
- A fee for training, software, or placement
- A check to deposit before day one
- Gift cards as payroll or equipment money
- Duties that could describe any job
- A rush request for bank login or an ID photo in a private chat
Scammers buy ads on the same boards everyone else uses. A familiar logo in search results is not a background check. If a "job" tried to run money through your account, tell the FTC.
Hours that actually flex
Caregivers last longer in async writing, chosen tutoring blocks, or VA calendars with written hours. Forced login support shifts do not mix with a sick kid.
Ask about core hours. Get the answer in email. Flexible in the headline is not a policy.

Are part-time data entry jobs real? A few are, as hourly employee roles with a named firm. Many are not. If they ask you to pay, it is not employment.
